Building Peace Through Dialogue

What Does Peacebuilding Mean?
Peacebuilding involves creating the conditions that allow people and communities to live together peacefully, resolve disagreements constructively, and build trust.
It can include dialogue, mediation, reconciliation, peace education, trauma healing, community engagement, and initiatives that address some of the social and economic factors that contribute to conflict.
OLENT’s Peacebuilding and Conflict Resolution Program focuses on strengthening communities and individuals through education, dialogue, and practical approaches to conflict management and trauma healing.
The Power of Dialogue
People may have different opinions, backgrounds, experiences, and interests.
Differences do not necessarily have to lead to conflict.
Dialogue creates an opportunity for people to listen to one another, understand different perspectives, identify common interests, and find peaceful solutions to disagreements.
Community dialogue can be particularly important in areas where relationships have been affected by conflict or mistrust.
When people have safe spaces to communicate, communities can begin rebuilding relationships and strengthening social cohesion.
Education as a Foundation for Peace
Education can contribute to peace by helping young people develop critical thinking, communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
Education can also create opportunities for young people to understand concepts such as responsibility, rights, tolerance, cooperation, and peaceful coexistence.
This is one reason OLENT places education at the center of its work.
